Computer Literacy Challenge Exam

All students interested in pursuing the Business Administration major are required to demonstrate his/her knowledge regarding the competency of the computer literacy prior to taking 100-level courses.  This requires a student to complete three five weeks courses (MIS 1 – Operating Systems and Electronic Communication including Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9 and Outlook 2010; MIS 2 – Spreadsheets including Excel 2010; and MIS 3 – Word Processing and Presentation Graphics including Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010) OR pass the online hands-on challenge exams for MIS 1, MIS 2 and MIS 3.

Note: MIS Challenge Exams sell out in advance of the exam date listed above. Please be sure to complete Step 1 as early as possible and Step 2 or Step 3 at least three days before the exam date (or earlier).

Choose one of the open exam times listed above. Do not arrive any later than 1:00 pm to take the last exam of the day. You will have a maximum of 50 minutes for each exam.

MIS 1,2,3 ONLINE HANDS-ON CHALLENGE EXAM INFORMATION

General Information

Step 1.

Sign-up for the challenge exam(s) in advance (exams sell out quickly)

Go to the Student Financial Services Center (Cashier’s Office) located in Lassen Hall 1001. Pay the non-refundable fee of $5.00 for each challenge exam of MIS 1and/or MIS 2 and/or MIS 3. A total of $15.00 charge is required for taking all three exams of MIS 1, MIS 2 and MIS 3. Retain your receipt.

Step 2.

Purchase the required registration card from the Hornet Bookstore

At least one week before the challenge exam(s) date, purchase (1) SimNet for Office 2010 Office Suite Registration Card issued by McGraw Hill if taking more than one exam, or (2) SimNet for Office 2010 One Module (Application) Registration Card issued by McGraw Hill if taking only MIS 2

The purchase of SimNet for Office 2010 Office Suite Registration Code by McGraw Hill is highly recommended because it has fewer problems. The Hornet Bookstore will not refund any purchase of SimNet for Microsoft Office 2010 -- One Module Registration (Application) Registration Code or of SimNet for Microsoft Office 2010 -- Office Suite Registration Code. It is the student’s responsibility to purchase the correct registration card.

Step 3.

Register SimNet

At least three days before the scheduled challenge exam date, register SimNet account through the Internet.

The SimNet URL for the challenge exam(s) is https://csus.simnetonline.com. Follow the SimNet registration procedure to obtain a user name and associated password for the challenge exam(s). Be sure to use the same first name and last name for SimNet as you have registered for classes at the College of Business Administration (CBA), California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) in order to properly record the challenge exam result(s). 

SimNet provides “SUPPORT” with “System Requirements Test” for testing your computer system; “Technical Support” via Phone (1-800-331-5094), Email and Connect Chat Online; and “SimNet Instant Help” for getting help resource that are posted at the lower right hand side corner of the first “SimNet Sign In” screen after typing https://csus.simnetonline.com.

Step 4.

Take challenge exams(s)

1.  Go to the designated computer lab (Tahoe 1009) 10 minutes before the scheduled time for taking the challenge exam.

2.  Show your student ID and give the receipt to the challenge exam proctor before entering the computer lab.

3.  Select a computer and start the Firefox only to sign in SimNet using https://csus.simnetonline.com, your user name and password from the SimNet registration.

4. Click your name on the top of the screen (before the "?" mark) to get the "Profile" screen.

5.  Select the proper class name from the "+ Add a course" in the middle of the right hand side of the screen

6.  Select MIS 1 - Operating Systems and Electronic Communication for taking MIS 1 challenge exam, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets for taking MIS 2 challenge exam, or MIS 3 - Word Processing and Presentation Graphics for taking MIS 3 challenge exam from "Available classes" popup window in the middle of the screen and click "Enroll" to enroll in the appropriate course.

7.  Click "ASSIGNMENTS" on the top of the screen.

8.  Click "Select another class" on the top of the screen to select MIS 1 - Operating Systems and Electronic Communication for taking MIS 1 challenge exam, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets for taking MIS 2 challenge exam, or MIS 3 - Word Processing and Presentation Graphics for taking MIS 3 challenge exam from "Available classes" to get the corresponding "To do" screen.

9.   Click "EXAMS" on the left hand side of the screen to get the "To do" screen of the exams.

10.  Click the proper challenge exam name and click "Take exam" on the next screen to load the exam.

11.  Click "Start Exam" on the right hand side of the screen to begin.

12.  You only have one try for each exam on the same challenge exam date.

13.  You have 30 attempts for each question and SIMnet will only record your last answer for the question.

14.  Each question has different weight.

15.  Every challenge exam is an online hands-on and limited to 50 minutes.  Therefore, you need to start taking the exam no later than 1:00 pm in order to have the full allowable time.

   

Grading

A student will receive a pass for fulfilling the computer literacy requirements of lower division classes without earning any credit if the score of the challenge exam is equal to or greater than 70 points.

A student will receive a fail for fulfilling the computer literacy requirements of lower division classes if the score of the challenge exam is less than 70 points.

The student will be expected to take the challenge exam at the specific sign up date and time.

Regulations

The student must observe the following regulations to have a proper exam environment in the computer lab for other students.

1.
Show your student ID and give the receipt to the exam proctor before entering the computer lab.
2.
Turn off cellular phone, pager and other electronic equipment.
3.
A receipt is only good for the specific challenge exam date.
4.
There is no refund if a student cannot make the specific challenge exam date.
5.
No lap-top computer or other personal computer is allowed
6.
No chatting, discussing, e-mailing or taking photos is allowed during the challenge exam.
7.
No book or note is allowed during the challenge exam.
8.
Absolute quiet, no eating and/or drinking is allowed during the challenge exam.

A student violating any of the above regulations will be asked to leave the computer lab and receive a fail for the corresponding exam.

It is highly recommended to review the SimNet MIS 1, MIS 2 and/or MIS 3 lessons and practice exams before taking the challenge exam.

Other Information

The SimNet registration code is good for the life time of Microsoft Office 2010.

MIS 123 challenge exam might switch to the SimNet for Microsoft Office 2013 or adopt a new courseware published by another reputable publisher starting Fall 2014.
